Conversation Club Resources

Often, international students arrive at our campus with good technical English language skills, but in need of some "refinement" in their everyday conversation skills. Our Conversation Club Program serves as a resource for pairing international students with U.S. students for the purpose of practicing conversation. With this effort, we hope that both the international and American students may benefit greatly from the time they spend together. The program may additionally provide a means of narrowing the cultural and social gap that may exist in the college environment through interactions and mutual understandings of one another's cultures.

The American students play the dual role as friend and coach in this rewarding endeavor. Through this program, the American students have the opportunity to meet  new friends, and learn more about other countries/cultures as they help the international students with their conversational English skills.

The international students, on the other hand, have a wonderful opportunity to learn the local language and "lingo", share their culture and customs with the American students, learn more about American/Arkansan customs, and make valuable friends.

International and American students who have indicated an interest in the Conversation Club Program will be gathered together at an informal training session, and groups of 3-5 international students with 2 American students will be formed. Then, the teams are on their own! Each group has weekly meetings, at the team's convenience, perhaps over coffee or lunch, where conversations may be "practiced".
