International Student Orientation Learning Outcomes and Schedule of Events

By attending the International Orientation, students will:

·         Be familiar with the role, mission, and services of the ISS Office.
·         Understand their responsibilities with regard to maintaining valid non-immigrant status as defined by the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
·         Identify themselves as part of the University of Arkansas community.
·         Be aware of the dynamics of cultural adjustment and its effect on academic expectations, professor/student relationships, social contexts, and other areas of their university experience.
·         Be aware of resources both on and off campus available to them to serve their variety of needs.
·         Be aware of opportunities for involvement in the campus and larger community, and know how to become engaged in such areas of interest.
·         Be aware of academic advisement and registration procedures.
·         Know how to contact their Cross-Cultural Mentors or the ISS staff if they need assistance or referrals of any kind.

Detailed Orientation Schedule

Here at the ISS Office, we are looking forward to your arrival. We want to personally welcome you and help you make your experience at the University of Arkansas an unforgettable one. You will receive an International Student Welcome Folder with an up-to-date list of the different international, as well as other, on-campus events and much more. But before you start having fun, come to one of our Intake Sessions at the Office of International Students and Scholars (ISS) located at 104 Holcombe Hall as soon as you arrive on campus. Make sure you bring the following documents with you: Passport, visa, and I-20/DS 2019 and I-94. You will not be able to register for classes until you attend intake. So please come and see us soon!!!

If family members will be traveling with you, they are welcome to participate in our orientation activities We definitely want you to take advantage of the different events that are being organized on campus. You will want to mark your calendar now, so you do not miss this excellent opportunity to get to know others and learn about our Razorback traditions. ISS expects that all new undergraduate and graduate students will attend the International Orientation Sessions starting on Wednesday, August 13th at 8:30 am at the Arkansas Union (ARKU).

Housing Contract Signing
 You have the opportunity to sign your On-Campus Housing contract if you have not done that before.
If you have signed & submitted the contract prior to arriving: you can move in starting August 12, on Mondays through Fridays between 9:00am to 11:30am and 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

If you sign the contract on Monday, August 12: you can move in after your contract signing at the  move-in times listed above.

If you sign the contract on Saturday, August 16: you can move in after your contract signing at between 2:00 and 4:00pm.

English Language Placement Test (ELPT)

 You will have the opportunity to take the ELPT.  If you have been asked to take an EASL Class, this is an opportunity to waive the class. Please bring a document of identity with you (e.g. passport, visa, I-20). There is a $10 fee for the test- bring cash or check.

New International Student Orientation

 All undergraduate and graduate students are EXPECTED to attend the New International Student Orientation. If possible, please make sure to attend an Intake Session before International Orientation starts. For an Intake Sessions Schedule, please visit our website http://iss.uark.edu/. Do not forget to bring your documents (I-20, I-94, passport, visa, and your letter of admission) when coming the first day of orientation. Sessions about Academics, Friendship Family, Cultural Adjustments, Safety and Conversation Club will be held until 4:00pm.

Making the transition from high school to a major university is challenging, sometimes frightening and certainly exciting -- all at the same time.  FYE is the Orientation for undergraduate students only. Navigating New Territory: U of A Essentials

All students will attend this session which is designed to provide you with information that will help you successfully navigate the U of A.  Representatives from Student Life, the Campus Card Office, Pat Walker Health Cneter, UAPD and Transit and Parking will be present to provide you with information on a variety of resources, programs and services that will assist you in supporting you in tthe areas of managing finances, health, safety and transportation.

Come watch the professors and staff in regalia and be formally welcomed into the University of Arkansas family. Enjoy grilled burgers and hotdogs outside after the Convocation! The University EXPECTS all students to attend the Convocation.
