International Student Orientation Learning Outcomes and Schedule of Events

By attending the International Orientation, students will:

·         Be familiar with the role, mission, and services of the ISS Office.
·         Understand their responsibilities with regard to maintaining valid non-immigrant status as defined by the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
·         Identify themselves as part of the University of Arkansas community.
·         Be aware of the dynamics of cultural adjustment and its effect on academic expectations, professor/student relationships, social contexts, and other areas of their university experience.
·         Be aware of resources both on and off campus available to them to serve their variety of needs.
·         Be aware of opportunities for involvement in the campus and larger community, and know how to become engaged in such areas of interest.
·         Be aware of academic advisement and registration procedures.
·         Know how to contact their Cross-Cultural Mentors or the ISS staff if they need assistance or referrals of any kind.

Detailed Orientation Schedule

Here at the ISS Office, we are looking forward to your arrival. We want to personally welcome you and help you make your experience at the University of Arkansas an unforgettable one. You will receive an International Student Welcome Folder with an up-to-date list of the different international, as well as other, on-campus events and much more. But before you start having fun, come to one of our Intake Sessions at the Office of International Students and Scholars (ISS) located at 104 Holcombe Hall as soon as you arrive on campus. Make sure you bring the following documents with you: Passport, visa, and I-20/DS 2019 and I-94. You will not be able to register for classes until you attend intake. So please come and see us soon!!!

If family members will be traveling with you, they are welcome to participate in our orientation activities We definitely want you to take advantage of the different events that are being organized on campus. You will want to mark your calendar now, so you do not miss this excellent opportunity to get to know others and learn about our Razorback traditions. ISS expects that all new undergraduate and graduate students will attend the International Orientation Sessions starting on Wednesday, August 13th at 8:30 am at the Arkansas Union (ARKU).

Then sign up for our Apartment shopping event. Students who sign up for the apartment shopping may need to visit http://offcampuschousing.uark.edu/ first and select no more than two apartments to visit. If you need additional help surfing this off campus housing website, ask your mentor.

	Tuesday, August 12th at 8:30am: At Hotz Hall 115 Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) You will have the opportunity to take the TOEFL. Bring your ID, passport, visa and I-20. There is a $38 feefor the test- bring cash or check..
	Monday, August 12: 9:00am � 11:00am & Saturday, August 16: 9:00am � 11:00am: At Hotz Hall 900 Housing Contract Signing You have the opportunity to sign your On-Campus Housing contract if you have not done that before. If you have signed & submitted the contract prior to arriving: you can move in starting August 12, on Mondays through Fridays between 9:00am to 11:30am and 1:00pm to 4:00pm. If you sign the contract on Monday, August 12: you can move in after your contract signing at the move-in times listed above. If you sign the contract on Saturday, August 16: you can move in after your contract signing at between 2:00 and 4:00pm.
	Monday, August 12 at 2:30pm: Kimpel 102 English Language Placement Test (ELPT) You will have the opportunity to take the ELPT. If you have been asked to take an EASL Class, this is an opportunity to waive the class. Please bring a document of identity with you (e.g. passport, visa, I-20). There is a $10 fee for the test- bring cash or check.
	Wednesday, August 13th at 8:30am: At the Arkansas Union New International Student Orientation All undergraduate and graduate students are EXPECTED to attend the New International Student Orientation. If possible, please make sure to attend an Intake Session before International Orientation starts. For an Intake Sessions Schedule, please visit our website http://iss.uark.edu/. Do not forget to bring your documents (I-20, I-94, passport, visa, and your letter of admission) when coming the first day of orientation. Sessions about Academics, Friendship Family, Cultural Adjustments, Safety and Conversation Club will be held until 4:00pm.
	Wednesday, August 13th at 10:15am: At the Arkansas Union Immigration Essentials Attend a very helpful session about all you need to know about immigration. It is very important to attend this session because you will need to know information about immigration in order to maintain your status. This session is REQUIRED for all students.
	Wednesday, August 13th at 11:30am: At the Arkansas Union Resource Fair Come learn about resources around campus and in town. Meet departments on campus and businesses in the area!
	Wednesday, August 13th at 12:30pm: At the Northwest Quad Welcome Lunch Have lunch and mingle with all the new students and staff! Lunch is provided in a buffet style campus cafeteria.
	Wednesday, August 13th at 4:30pm: At the Bank of America Reception and Opening a Bank Account Although you will get to know about banks in Fayetteville during our Resource Fair, you will also have the opportunity to open a bank account while enjoying the reception Bank of America has prepared to welcome new International students. 	Thursday, August 14th at 8:00 am: At the Arkansas Union First Year Experience (FYE) Orientation Making the transition from high school to a major university is challenging, sometimes frightening and certainly exciting -- all at the same time. FYE is the Orientation for undergraduate students only. This Orientation will include both International and American undergraduate students. 	Thursday, August 14th at 9:30 am: At the Pat Walker Health Center Navigating New Territory: U of A Essentials All students will attend this session which is designed to provide you with information that will help you successfully navigate the U of A. Representatives from Student Life, the Campus Card Office, Pat Walker Health Cneter, UAPD and Transit and Parking will be present to provide you with information on a variety of resources, programs and services that will assist you in supporting you in tthe areas of managing finances, health, safety and transportation.

	Undergrads: Friday, August 15th from 9:00am - 12:00pm at the Arkansas Union Grads: Friday, August 15th from 10:30am at the Holcombe Hall Campus Tours Get a tour of the University of Arkansas campus. Visit different points of interest on campus and get to know the area better! Bring along your class schedule to get an idea of where your classes are.

	Friday, August 15th at 6:00pm: St. Paul's on Dickson Welcome Dinner Come and join us for the official Welcome Event for our Fall 2008 International Students. Come eat and get to know other new students, University Staff, as well as some Community members. Don't miss out on this opportunity to enjoy this special dinner planned to honor YOU.
	Saturday, August 16th at 5:30pm: Meet at the Holcombe Hall Dinner in an American home Come and experience a new culture by visiting and having dinner in an American Home. 	Monday, August 18th at 8:00am: Meet at the Holcombe Hall Devil�s Den Trip Join us for day of fun while exploring caves, crevices and bluff overlooks. We will have lunch at the pavilion and play some outdoor games. If you know how to swim, there will be an opportunity to swim. Come and walk through the wonderful trails while getting to admire part of the Ozarks. This event is sponsored by Chi Alpha.
	Tuesday, August 19th at 2:30pm: At the Holcombe Hall Ice Cream Social Interested in having some Ice cream? Interested in getting to know other people? Then, take an hour off from your hectic schedule and come join us for a cold treat. This event is sponsored by ISCA.
	Tuesday, August 19th at 6:00pm: At the HPER HPER Night Visit HPER- the Fitness and Sports Center at the University of Arkansas! Get to see the swimming pool, the game courts, and the endless facilities that are available to you. Tour the gym and take part in the games and activities offered!

	Wednesday, August 20th at 6:00 pm: At the ISS Classroom Movie Night Come, relax and watch a Movie with other students! Talk to your mentor for information about the movie we will be watching.
	Saturday, August 23rd at 9:00am: Meet at the Holcombe Hall Farmer�s Market Visit the Fayetteville Square, the heart of Fayetteville downtown. You will get to see local sellers bring in fresh vegetables, flowers and other goods.
	Sunday, August 24th at 4:00pm: At the Bud Walton Arena Academic Convocation and Burger Bash Come watch the professors and staff in regalia and be formally welcomed into the University of Arkansas family. Enjoy grilled burgers and hotdogs outside after the Convocation! The University EXPECTS all students to attend the Convocation.
